How to Stay Motivated in the Studio

The image below is of me cross-country skiing this January at Sovereign Lake.  I love getting out into nature all year round, cross-coutry skiing is a lovely way to enjoy the forest while getting some exercise.  I find I feel recharged and more focused in the studio when I get back from being outdoors.

How to Create a Gallery Wall

Below is a great video I found on the Ikea website that shows you how to go about hanging artwork in an awkward space.  By pairing numerous smaller and larger framed prints and original works on paper together you can create a unique personalized display that has more impact than if you had just hung one or two lonely pieces on a large blank wall.  To visit my shop and browse watercolor art prints click here.

How to Create a Gallery Wall

Below is another helpful video on how to hang art in a gallery wall style grouping.  This video uses Ikea frames and a paper template they have available, though you could easily make your own.  I love the unity and impact you can create with grouping likes these.

How to Start a Bullet Journal

This year I have started a new way of organizing my life, work and various other projects and inspirations. You may have heard about the Bullet Journal… or not.

Definition:  The Bullet Journal is a customizable and forgiving organization system. It can be your to-do list, sketchbook, notebook, day planner, and diary, but most likely, it will be all of the above.

I have just started mine and look forward to sharing some of the layouts and my ideas with you.  It is a great way to stay organized and infuse each day with a little more creativity. I chose a mini binder from staples to make mine in, this way I can switch the pages around and transfer anything over for next year’s journal that I want to keep.

If you are an avid list maker, have more than 3 notebooks on the go at one time, and love stationary items and office supplies——THIS IS FOR YOU!

It took me a little bit to get the concept and customize it to how it would fit my life best, now that I have I am so glad I took the time to lay it out.  I feel organized and inspired and feel I have a much better idea of what I hope to accomplish and where I can add more balance into my life this year.

This is a good article to get started with and find a little more out about the Bullet Journal system: Learn more here.

It doesn’t have to be fancy! Above is an example of a page I am working from right now to create this newsletter.  The difference between this and a random note in a notebook is that this page is now indexed and easy to find again, I can add to it for each months newsletter and look back to see what I have covered earlier in the year each time, and it is now one collection in a larger group of collections which together create a cohesive big picture for my brand, and creative business ideas and where I want to go with them this year.

Impressionistic Watercolor Florals

Once in a while I like to loosen up with impressionistic watercolour florals.  I mostly do this for the enjoyment of seeing the movement of the paint on the paper and the blending of colours. Above are a few examples of these florals.  I was able to quickly layout a design on 90 lb watercolour paper and used it as a cover design for my Bullet Journal.Floral Heart
